How many times have you heard the saying, “You are what you eat?” But did you know that what you think is equally as important? A positive outlook on life is one of the most important keys to success. How we perceive ourselves, the world around us, and how we interact with others have profound effects on our brain, health, success and overall well-being.

Sounds good right? But the challenge, how do you maintain your positive thinking when everything around you seems to be falling apart?

Here are several tips that I use:

  1. Always maintain an attitude of gratitude. No matter how hard it may seem. Take slow deep breaths and began to think on the things and people you are grateful for in your life. I have found that you can’t be truly grateful and not began to feel better.
  2. Eliminate all negative self talk. This is a total joy stealer! This is something that we have to be conscious of because, most negative self talk is automatic, we aren’t even conscious of it. We must make a conscious effort to use positive self talk. If you don’t have one, write one out, memorize and say it out loud daily with belief and conviction. It is when we allow our mind to wander that we end up focusing on the negative. But if we think positive on purpose, then there isn’t any room for negativity in our mind.
  3. Have a healthy self esteem. This comes with personal development, and should be done daily. When we work on ourselves we learn not to take things personally, but instead we are able to stand back and see life’s lessons from a healthy perspective. We are then able to lose the victim mentality and acquire a victor’s mentality.
  4. Visualizing your life as you desire it, not as it is. Have a dream board or dream book, and add pictures of the things you would like, and place it where you can visualize and focus on your goals and dreams.
  5. Living a purposeful and passionate life. Meaning don’t just exist, live your life on purpose, as if it were your last day. Live for those moments that will take your breath away. Find out what you love to do, no matter what it is, and do it. I have found if you are doing what you love to do, you can’t help but be happy.
  6. Giving. Contributing in a positive way. So many times when people think of giving, they think of money, but there are other ways to give. Such as being a mentor, volunteering at shelters, hospitals, boys and girls clubs, etc. Find a way that you enjoy to give back to the community. The key is to give with your whole heart, expecting nothing in return.
